água-vida // water-life
sourdough starter, zinc sheets, etching prints on paper, artist book
2018
I experimented a lot with calcographic methods in this project. I wanted something different and exciting. Because when I was doing this work I was also making bread in a regular basis, I thought I could in some way connect the two. After some research I found the bacteria in my sourdough starter interfere with the metal, because of its acidity, and I thought it would be interesting to make some involuntary impressions with it, and then printing them.
The choice to present in the printmaking workshop was a way to make a connection between my etching work and something that is very homey and comfortable, like making the bread. The title is a reference to the portuguese words "água-tinta" and "água-forte", which are both etching techniques. I played with these words - "água-vida" means "water-life" - to relate with the living bacteria in my starter.
